Cash strapped airlines look to “Railways” for inspirationBy The Elefunt Delhi: The cash-strapped Indian Airline industry is reportedly looking to the Indian Railways to turn their fortunes and move towards profitability. In recent times the Indian Airline industry has been hit hard with increasing fuel prices, depreciating Rupee and pilot and airline worker strikes. The Airline industry is a low-margin business and is only profitable if the flights operate at full capacity and who are inspired by Indian Railways to operate at full capacity than the Railways. The Indian railways has consistently operated at 323% capacity for several decades with less than 15% casualty rate. In the past decade there have only been 37 major train accidents (Not including individual casualties)To increase ridership and cut costs Airlines are now expected to allow customers to travel while standing. No seat-belts will be required on these flights as commuters will not have any room to move. A commuter will be lucky if he can move his leg during the entire duration of the flight. When asked if the Airlines would permit use of cell-phones on the flight, the spokesman said that Customer safety will always be of utmost importance and cell-phone usage is a strictly prohibited. The new super-business classThe Air-hostess union was not particularly thrilled with this decision and were specifically concerned about losing their makeup while making their way through the crowds. The airline is expected to hire special Chai(Tea) and Samosa (Potato Patties) vendors who specialize in navigating through these crowds. The best seats in the airlines will be reserved for a new super-business class who can enjoy a natural breeze throughout the flight. These seats will be sold at a premium and commuters will be strapped together for added safety. These changes are expected to drive ticket prices down and generate huge increase in ridership. If you ride the new airline, do share your experiences at http://theelefunt.com or on our Facebook page.Posthumous feedback is welcome.(Based on source-http://theelefunt.com/2012/05/18/cash-strapped-airlines-look-to-railways-for-inspiration/)The Facts"The Indian civil aviation sector is showing an extraordinary growth rate in the last few years. In 2005-06, the passenger traffic rose by 25-30% and is expected to grow by 25% year-on-year over the next five years. Such a pace of growth in air traffic has however resulted in a strain on the aviation infrastructure, which is already stretched- resulting in traffic congestion and delays at majority of the airports.
Passenger Traffic
The compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) for the last 10 years is 7.2%. However, if the last five years data is taken into consideration, the CAGR is 15%. The traffic forecast on the domestic sector up to 2015 is based on the last 10 years' data.
Taking into account the high growth rate being experienced in India, the strong economic growth and the future trend of aircraft procurement by the Indian operators, the domestic as well as international passengers carried till the year 2015 are projected as follows:
