A drunk elephant on the road |
They came in herd running wildly, shrieking and falling. The villagers, terrified and running helter- scelter all around. Deepu Ghosh was there and witnessed all this, hiding behind a Banyan tree. He narrated me this story while he met me recently in Kolkata.
I'm summarizing the same as reported in the media:It was at Dumurkota village in West Bengal Near The Kangsabati River system (also variously known as the Kasai and Cossye, and not to be confused with the Kasai River in Africa ), rises from the Chota Nagpur plateau in the state of Jharkhand , India and passes through the districts of Purulia , Bankura and Paschim Medinipur in West Bengal before draining in the Bay of Bengal.
That was the scene of chaos as 50 drunken elephants went on a rampage after reportedly consuming 18 containers of the locally-made alcohol drink, Mahua.
The herd of elephants allegedly drank 500 litres of the drink and went in search of more. In the process of getting another drink, the herd of 50 elephants reportedly destroyed three houses and damaged paddy fields. "Unfortunately, these animals live very close to human proximity and recognise the smell of the drink," local forestry official spokesperson Asish Samanat told. The villagers managed to drive the animals back into the jungle with the only damage being the "heck of a hangover" that Samanat believed they'll have the next morning.
