View Larger MapMr. Mahavir Gupta was standing near the statue of late Mr. G. B. Pant at the end of the Mall in Nanital, the famous hill station with a beautiful lake and a base camp town for all types of tours to interiors of Kumaon.A huge man like me, Mahavir was engrossed in his own thoughts, eating boiled spiced corn when I noticed that he took out a paper from his pocket and along with it his wallet, which he dropped on the ground being totally unaware of it.The place being crowded, I saw someone, a boy moving towards it with the clear intentions of picking it up quietly. I yelled at Mahavir and walked to him, suddenly making him conscious of what had happened. The boy walked away hurriedly. Mahavir was surprised and with an expression of gratitude, he invited me to a small joint across the road for a lunch and as I was hungry after a long walk from Tallital to the other end of Mall in that exceptionally cold day, I readily agreed.Soon we became friends and we decided to meet in the early evening at Snow-View Bar of KMVN(state govt hotel guest house) situated at the top of the mountain for which you have to take a rope way to the top with a breath taking view of Himalayan range and of Nanital town with it's heavenly lake viewUnlike foreigners, for we Indians, drinks and dinner are two separate events, so we had few drinks and had to climb down before 7.30 pm as the last trolley car was about to depart. It was then I told him about PANGOT, a small beautiful place about 12 KM from Nanital, when he complained about what to do more in Nanital, after being in other places in Kumaon.Mahavir immediately agreed and next day we started with 2 other German friends for PANGOT, after making necessary arrangements.Mountain quail camp is a nice place in PANGOT.The forests at Pangot are among the most extensive in Kumaon or Garhwal, and are still unspoiled, with only a few small villages.
For wildlife enthusiasts, the forests around Pangot are rich in wildlife, and are home to Himalayan black bear, leopard, sambhar, barking deer, ghooral, and pine marten. For birdwatchers, the avifauna is quite different from the foothill forest around Camp Corbett. Birds of prey are prominent and include Lammergeier, Griffon Vulture and Golden Eagle. By staying at both Camp Corbett and Mountain Quail Camp you get the chance to appreciate the bird life at different elevations. There is considerable migratory movement between the plains, foothills and mountains according to the seasons, which adds to the birdwatching interest.
Siddharth Anand who manages the show, offers a range of treks from Mountain Quail Camp. These treks range from one to seven days. Enroute you will traverse forested mountain ridges with panoramic views of the Himalayan snow peaks. A recommended trek, especially for Corbett fans and fishermen, is the 7-day trek to Chuka, where we have a basic Camp in a spectacular setting next to the Mahakali River. The dense hill forests of this remote area are where Jim Corbett tracked and dispatched the Chuka, Thak and Ladhya man-eating tigers. This area is only accessible by foot and has changed little since Corbett’s day. These treks are customized to your own requirements. Please contact us by e-mail for more details.
The mountain forest trails around Pangot are perfect for pony-trekking, using sturdy Bhotia ponies. Overland jeep safaris to Nepal are also available, including Bardia and Suklaphanta Wildlife reserves, as the border is only a few hours’ drive from the Camp.
